If you care about cooking, recipes, and nutrition, chances are you have a good grasp on what is healthy and what is not. Even so, it is interesting to see that from one year to another, different foods can become, trendy due to their health contents. It does not mean that the popular foods (or ingredients) in a given year are necessarily healthier than a lot of alternatives. But it seems to be an unspoken rule in food communities that the healthiest foods get a few years each to occupy the spotlight.
When you think about it this way, it is easy to wonder which foods might be up next. We have a few predictions heading into a New Year.
Sugar Alternatives
All over the world, people seem to be growing wise to the negative impacts of sugar, and as a result they are looking for alternatives. You may have noticed, for instance, that sodas are becoming less popular, and several alternatives based on carbonated water and authentic fruit flavoring are gaining ground. This is almost certainly indicative of a trend we will see in the coming year. As another look at food trends stated, we will be seeing more and more natural alternatives to sugar: syrups made from fruits, roots, vegetables and fruits, most likely.
Powders
If you do some looking around at different trend predictions, you will see a lot written about things like cacao and matcha, and a few other powders that can be used to provide us with flavor and nutrients. These powders in teas, juices, and even in baking are becoming very popular, but we have yet to see a true boom on the consumer side of things. It may be coming in 2018.
Cherries
When you think about it, cherries just seem due. For a while, they have seemed like the garnishes or toys of the fruit world. They are often seen as classic fruit symbols on slot arcades, which already gave them a toy-like reputation before they were used in other games as well. But beyond slots, cherries are popular symbols in video games as rewards as well. Meanwhile, most other fruits have had their heyday: apples, citrus, various types of berries. They have all been popular for a time. Cherries happen to have excellent health benefits as well, and it feels like we are not far off from people realizing this and making them the next trendy fruit.
Seaweed
One of the most curious items that tends to be popping up on trend lists is tacos. This is perfectly fine and everyone loves tacos, and they can be made with all kinds of different ingredients. They do not have to be traditional Mexican tacos. Even so, we do not typically think of tacos as being particularly healthy, and that goes against most modern food trends. But as one writer said, we should look out for seaweed shells! This speaks to the subtly popular notion of using seaweed as an alternative base in foods for everything from pasta to, apparently, taco shells
Beets
Beets, somewhat like cherries, simply seem to be due. They are sometimes dismissed because their taste is not particularly popular, and in fact a beet juice is often discussed in relatively negative terms. There aren’t many foods better for certain health concerns like blood pressure and heart health, however, and this should inevitably lead to more interest in beets, and creative ways to use them. For instance, think about this: fruit and vegetable smoothies have become increasingly common in recent years, and throwing some shredded beets into a smoothie does almost nothing to alter the flavor, yet gives you all the health benefits!
